Baltimore native mazie seized the world’s attention with her viral psychedelic single “dumb dumb,” which was featured on the soundtrack of Netflix’s original film Do Revenge. Since then, the song has taken off and has been streamed over 60 million times and used in over 1 million original TikTok videos in just one month.

Her new single “girls just wanna have sex” (Out November 18th) is exactly as advertised – a cheeky head-banger that sees mazie reframing female pleasure outside of the male gaze.

The production is courtesy of Grammy nominated Joe London and Platinum selling Elie Rizk, mazie’s childhood neighbor (a friendship that began at age 15 and has resulted in the pair’s move out to LA together). Elie Rizk has also worked with Bella Poarch (“Build a Bitch”), Remi Wolf (“Quiet On Set”), and Keshi (“TOUCH”). “girls just wanna have sex” is maximalist, throwing together blown-out guitars and energetic drums to create an in-your-face anthem for girls to mosh to while screaming about getting head. mazie explains, “I believe that women having sex – especially sex with other women – needs to be celebrated and destigmatized.”

The release of “girls just wanna have sex” comes with the announcement of mazie’s debut album, blotter baby, due Spring 2023.

Mazie

Pairing fatalistic lyrics with shiny alt-pop arrangements that are as infectious as they are unpredictable has seen the quick ascension of 21-year old Baltimore native mazie. Her single “dumb dumb,” which appears on her debut EP the rainbow cassette, is a perfect embodiment of mazie’s multilayered, psychedelic twist on pop that’s Stepford Wives meets Lisa Frank.

“My music is heavily rooted in existentialism, and the duality of the whimsical and upbeat combined with the sadness of the lyricism” mazie shares. “I’m always trying to walk that line.”

Originally written the day after the Capitol Insurrection, “dumb dumb” has found an audience around the world, including being used as a protest song in Russia and Ukraine.

To celebrate the success of the track, today (October 12th) mazie shares a “trippy version” music video for the song. The kaleidoscopic clip was created by 2D/3D digital designer Joel Dudzik using PyTTI – an AI software that generates images based off a text input. “Our goal has always been to simulate psychedelic experiences and AI art provides an incredible toolkit that allows us to very accurately communicate what tripping visuals are like,” mazie shares about the video.

“dumb dumb” was produced by mazie’s childhood neighbor Elie Rizk, who she’s known since she was 15 and they both moved out to LA together.

Mazie

mazie is making a name for herself with music that mixes modern malaise with vintage psychedelia: nostalgia laced with an impending sense of doom fueled by a world in ever-deepening crisis. The Baltimore-raised, Los Angeles-based musician released her debut EP the rainbow cassette this summer via Good Boy / Virgin.

Today, mazie returns with a new single and video, “spinnin.”

“‘spinnin’ felt like such a turning point for me in the studio — we made the whole thing in a day,” notes mazie. “It just flowed out of me. It’s exactly the music that I wanted to be making after the EP and said exactly what’s on my mind: I might not know who I am or where I’m going but life keeps moving and that’s enough for me!” The track is also accompanied by a psychedelic, bubble gum-colored video, directed by Lauren and Phil.

mazie will be hitting the road on her first national tour as the support for COIN.

mazie makes music that mixes modern malaise with vintage psychedelia: nostalgia laced with an impending sense of doom fueled by a world in ever-deepening crisis, as heard on her new single available today. She released her single “dumb dumb” last month. She has confirmed a September 26th slot at this year’s The Governors Ball in New York City along with her first national tour supporting COIN this fall. Today, the LA-based, Baltimore-raised musician shares her existential pop gem “make believe.” The new track is the latest from her upcoming debut EP, the rainbow cassette, out August 25th via Good Boy / Virgin Music.

Written a few months after moving from Baltimore to Los Angeles, mazie and her producer / childhood friend Elie Jay Rizk crafted “make believe” in a place of immense gratitude. “Our lives were (and are) so amazing here that it was overwhelming,” notes mazie. “Elie and I also really share in existentialism and nihilism and were discussing how our lives innately have no meaning but the meaning we place in our lives is so special and that we are so f**king lucky to live the lives we do. Our families are very traditional and we were reflecting on how lucky we are to be able to pursue something so untraditional and that is exclusively in the pursuit of creativity and happiness.”

mazie just announced her debut EP, the rainbow cassette, out August 25th via Good Boy / Virgin Music. The music mixes modern malaise with vintage psychedelia: nostalgia laced with an impending sense of doom fueled by a world in ever-deepening crisis, as heard on her new single “dumb dumb,” available today. Written the day after the Capitol Insurrection, mazie notes “We had been discussing QAnon, misinformation and how quickly the internet has degraded the concept of ‘fact.’ The lyrics ‘Everyone is dumb’ just felt like a very fitting synopsis of those conversations.” She adds, “Lyrics like ‘I just wanna be the comic relief, making jokes not taking any responsibility’ were heavily referencing the memes from the Insurrection and how content like that so quickly degrades the severity of what was happening.”
