Madison Cunningham

Two-time Grammy nominee Madison Cunningham unveils a new song from her highly anticipated new album, Revealer. The song is “In From Japan”.

“I think ultimately this song is about being frustrated with the idea of purpose, and burdened by the sweeping questions that come with ‘No one’s holding you back now’ and all of the negative space that is left to make mistakes in,” Cunningham explains. “It very much reflected how I was feeling at the time—only able to speak in metaphors and having a hard time expressing what was so paralyzed in myself.”

“This was eventually recorded up at Flora Recording and Playback in Portland, OR with the great Tucker Martine,” she continues. “These were some of the most special musical memories that found me in a time where I really needed the space to sprawl out and throw paint at everything within sight, and that is exactly what we did.”

She also released a live version of her song “Hospital.”

Revealer is set for release on September 9 via Verve Forecast.

Madison Cunningham begins her tour next month. FEMMUSIC saw her in 2019 and 2021

Two-time Grammy nominee Madison Cunningham’s new album Revealer is set for release September 9 on Verve Forecast. She’s released the single “Hospital” to celebrate.

“Hospital is written from this sort of half awake, slightly drunken, on the cusp of a nervous breakdown perspective,” Cunningham explains. “I think ultimately it speaks to the impossible condition of being sedated with information and trying to hold onto your sanity.”

Revealer finds Cunningham working once again with Mike Elizondo (Twenty One Pilots, Gary Clark Jr.) as well as longtime producer and collaborator Tyler Chester and Tucker Martine (Neko Case, Sufjan Stevens).

“To me, revealer is the binding theme of the album,” says Cunningham. “The hand that slowly chips away at the mirror in which you see yourself and the world and replaces it with the reflection that is most true.” The album is full of confessions, intimations and hard truths—a self-portrait of a young artist who is full of doubt and uncertainty yet bursting with exciting ideas about music and life.

“With all of the uncertainties in the world and in this song, it is a comfort to know definitively that it is VERY FUN to sing and dance with your friends and bandmates,” says bassist Bridget Kearney. “How did it take us 16 years of being a band to make this discovery? It would seem, for lack of a better word…. Obvious. All in good time, though. Now we know. Hoping everyone out there has as much fun singing and dancing to this song as we did while making this video.” “

Lake Street Dive’s new album Obviously comes out March 12 on Nonesuch Records. Obviously is produced by Mike Elizondo.
