FEMMUSIC: Can you describe your songwriting technique?

JL: Well, no, not really. It’s not an exact science ya know. Usually a tune’ll pop in my head, or sometimes the subject matter, and then it just basically builds itself from there. And on rare occasions, its as if the tune is channeling itself thru me. It’ll all come out at once, words and music, with very little thought process involved on my part! Cool, huh?

FEMMUSIC: As a woman in the music industry, have you been discriminated against?

JL: This question is asked over and over. Of COURSE there’s discrimination in the music biz. Has been since the beginning. You gotta know somebody, or sleep with somebody, or get dope for somebody etc. etc. etc. I just don’t play the game. Screw you if you need to use the offer of a gig at your venue to get laid!! How pathetic are those folks?! Lets move on….

FEMMUSIC: What one thing would you like to change about the music industry?

JL: The perception that only youth and sex can sell records. There is more to the world of music than Britney and N’Sync.

FEMMUSIC: What advice would you offer an artist just starting out?

JL: Do it how ya wanna do it. Don’t conform because THEY say you should. Be relentless in pursuing gigs, …And most of all…surround yourself with the best fricken musicians you possibly can!! You don’t grow or learn anything, if you’re the best player in the band, all the time.
