Following their anthemic single “Sorry I’m Just A Waste of Time,” Los Angeles five-piece rock band Julez and the Rollerz present the witty and rip-roaring “Be Something New”, the second official single off of their upcoming EP Is This Where The Party Is?, to be released on May 19th 2023.
Recorded at The Cave with Josiah Mazzaschi, “Be Something New” is an entirely self-aware song about living every day in the relatable mundane aspects of life (“I took a ride up Laurel Canyon Blvd just to see how I’d feel another solid time around”), and wanting to be a brand new person; a classic longing of wanting to ‘be something new’ in a brand new city” bandleader Jules Batterman explains. “It’s easy for people to assume who you are based on your ‘sign’, life habits, etc. and of course at a certain point one would want to break out of those assumptions.” Julez sings of, and longs for, the Renaissance of self identity.
The resulting song remains a deceptively self-deprecating jam, similar to their last, that continues to celebrate self-love and embrace change–it’s a catharsis and a party in just over three minutes. With catchy riffs, confessional lyrics, girl group harmonies, and a sunny chorus, “Be Something New” is perfect for singing full-blast in the car with the windows up while driving up Laurel Canyon Blvd.
Bridging classic rock polish, a dash of punk, and indie pop, the band also nods to soulful vocals, acknowledging and incorporating their rock ‘n roll roots without relying on revivalist pastiche. As her wit and vocal talents continue branching out, Batterman’s bravado, authenticity, and songwriting know-how grow more irresistible with each release.
Originally started in 2017 as a solo project, Julez assembled her Rollerz after moving from New York City to LA in 2020, solidifying their all-femme lineup a year later. Consisting of Batterman, and currently Rachel David (bass/vocals), Shea Carothers (synth/vocals), Hannah Hughes (guitar/vocals) and Emi Borja (Drums), the band has a tight-knit, down-to-earth core. Onstage, they exude effortless swagger and charisma without sacrificing their relatability or commitment to having a killer time, making them local favorites. A growing force in the L.A. rock scene, Julez and The Rollerz are ready to rock your socks off.
