Effie Zilch – Multitudes

Effie Zilch by Amanda Lopez

Bay Area blues-rock duo, Effie Zilch, release “Up and Down Blues,” the groove-laced lead single from their forthcoming EP, Multitudes, out on November 8th via Redtone Records. In “Up and Down Blues,” the band pushes beyond the 12-bar format but keeps all the angst.

Effie Zilch is GRAMMY-winning songwriter/producer/guitar hero Steve Wyreman, and guitar-slinging vocalist Evanne Barcenas. Steve is currently the touring guitarist for Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft, who just opened for Pearl Jam on some of their Dark Matter Tour dates this summer. He’s worked with artists like Jhené Aiko, Percy Sledge, Big Sean, Common, Rhianna, John Legend, and more. He won a GRAMMY for his work with Leon Bridges in 2019, and was nominated again for work with Leon in 2021.

Multitudes, the first release of two in tandem, is a reflection of the unrestrained, the frenzied and the patient. “We recorded this project mostly between brief interludes from the road with little time for second-guessing,” they explain. “Often the accidents became the features. Old and new friends came through lending expertise and levity with drums, backgrounds, upright bass and in-key dog barks. Once all the pieces were gathered, we packed them up and headed to the hallowed halls of United Recording and East West Studios to fuse them into being. Maybe it’s our age, maybe it’s our time, but clarity and courage are on our side. There’s a little bit of something for everyone,” they add. “We contain multitudes.”
