Emma Louise – Nothing Could Tear Us Apart

Following last month’s luminous “God Between Us,” the lauded Australian singer-songwriter returns with another glimpse of her fourth studio album Sunshine for Happiness, out May 1 via Future Classic.

Entitled “Nothing Could Tear Us Apart,” the track captures the blind, often unfounded belief that love alone is enough, delivered through a polished, retro-tinged sound anchored by tight percussion and an irresistibly catchy chorus.
“I wrote ‘Nothing Could Tear Us Apart’ pretty early on,” Emma reflects. “This song was definitely born from a lot of anxiety — it kinda says “I’m scared” and “you’re scared”, we’re having a pretty rough time but don’t worry nothing could tear us apart. And even though the relationship I was in when I wrote it is over… it’s true that a little part of us will always stayed tied together. So in a way it’s still true!”
Sunshine for Happiness follows Emma’s collaborative album Dumb with fellow Aussie Flume. The record is an ethereal and deeply personal collection that transforms a moment of personal collapse into a radiant musical rebirth.
The release of first single “God Between Us” came with a stunning official music video showcasing natural beauty around the world, shot by Sam Kristofski (Tame Impala, PNAU) on 16mm film in front of the active Kīlauea volcano in Hawaii, as well as in Los Angeles and at Emma’s property in Australia.
The creation of Sunshine for Happiness began back in 2020. Emma found herself at the lowest point of her life. Following the release of her acclaimed 2018 album Lilac Everything, she felt burned out, isolated, and ready to walk away from music entirely. During what she described as a “complete mental breakdown,” she checked herself into a hospital in Los Angeles, an experience that would ultimately reshape both her life and art.
Inside the hospital sat a piano. Drawn to it almost instinctively, Emma began writing songs free from expectation or pressure. What followed was a creative outpouring, reflections on love, healing, longing, and the clarity that can emerge from darkness. At her personal lowest, she found an unexpected peace and turned it into song.
These songs became Sunshine for Happiness, a luminous 12-track album that documents the breakdown that became a breakthrough. Across the album, Emma explores the space where beauty and suffering coexist. “Beggar” captures the desperation of longing for love, while “Medicine” reflects on mistaking toxicity for healing. Elsewhere, Emma contemplates mortality (“Dust”), celebrates presence (“All Beautiful Things”), and reflects on collective grief (“Trigger of a Gun”).
The album closes with a trio that traces Emma’s inner transformation. “Holy Holy” offers gratitude for survival and renewal, “The Absence of You” wrestles with losing spiritual connection while still finding beauty in darkness, and “Through Love We See The World” emerges as a triumphant declaration of connection and healing.
Sunshine for Happiness was created with a GRAMMY-award winning team, of Tobias Jesso Jr. (Olivia Dean, Harry Styles, Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa, HAIM) and Shawn Everett (Sombr, Miley Cyrus, Kacey Musgraves, Maggie Rogers, Hozier).
