JUNO-winning singer-songwriter Dominique Fils-Aimé releases her highly anticipated new album My World Is The Sun via Ensoul Records.
The second installment of the trilogy that began with Our Roots Run Deep (2023), Fils-Aimé focuses on the very essence of the creative process as it reflects her commitment to freedom, creativity, and spiritual dimensions as well as her desire to create from a place of honesty and vulnerability. The sonic soundscape of the album weaves together jazz, soul, and blues as the singularities of Dominique’s vocals solidify her deep connection to her audience.
The soft twang of a nylon guitar. A hauntingly beautiful voice cutting through the haze of a bygone recording. The sound of waves crashing, washing away the pretty tune. Dominique Fils-Aimé paints a surreal image of a “sea of clouds below our feet.” Chanting can be heard from below as the celestial bodies descend. The sound of hand drums grows louder as an ethereal drone fades.
One day, in her family home, Dominique stumbled upon an old cassette from the 70s. The sound of her mother’s voice on the tape moved her. She had no idea her mother was such a talented vocalist. That same recording is the opening song for Dominique’s latest album My World Is The Sun. The decision to open with this classically informed guitar piece sets a formal backdrop where Dominique creates stylistic contrasts. The album unfolds like a narrative—morphing with the many moods we experience in a day. Expressive melodies evolve intuitively, breaking away from formulaic arrangements. Dominique closes the album by recording her own version of the opening song, completing a natural cycle. Returning to the intimate space from where the album began emphasizes the importance of returning to a space of contentment within ourselves. Seeking and building peace for ourselves and others is a value that Dominique’s mother held dear. Finding the beauty in imperfection, Dominique gives the world her creative and spiritual process in its entirety—with all the quirks, chuckles and deep breaths.
Fils-Aimé is renowned for her rich warm voice and socially engaged writing. Her musical universe, at the crossroads of jazz, soul, and blues, explores the emotional palette of African-American music alongside introspective and contemporary forms. She crafts her work in cycles, with each trilogy telling a unique chapter in her quest for sonic, creative, and spiritual freedom.
On stage, she offers an immersive performance that invites audiences to delve into the roots of their soul, guided by a profound quest for connection with the higher self. Live at the Montreal International Jazz Festival (2025), her first live album, recorded on the festival’s main stage in 2024, is a testament to the strength of her stage presence and her ability to forge an intimate connection with her audience.
In recent years, her international reputation has been solidified through prestigious invitations: Jazz à Vienne (where she opened for Jamie Cullum in July 2025), the 2025 North Sea Jazz Festival, the 2025 Jazzablanca Festival in Morocco, as well as her performances at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, where she represented Canada. In the fall of 2025, she also embarked on her first coast-to-coast U.S. tour, featuring notable concerts at the Blue Note New York, the Blue Note Los Angeles and The Monterey Jazz Festival.
In 2026, Fils-Aimé will present her new album on stage during a world tour that will take her to Europe including concerts at La Maroquinerie (Paris) and Le Botanique (Brussels) as well as a premiere at the Montreal International Jazz Festival and another tour in the United States.
