Your Smith – The Rub

Your Smith by Erica Hernandez

Minneapolis indie-pop artist Your Smith releases her long-awaited new album, The Rub.

The Rub

At its core, the record highlights Smith’s roots as a songwriter, built on classic songcraft and earnest, confessional lyrics. Written and recorded with Jake Luppen and Nathan Stocker of Hippo Campus at the iconic Pachyderm Studios, The Rub wraps those stories in ’70s R&B textures and soft rock ease, unfolding in breezy grooves, lush guitar tones, and brightly soulful piano melodies.

The Rub finds Smith stepping back into music after nearly four years away, during which she started a family and returned to college. “A big part of making this record was figuring out how music could coexist with this new life I’d created,” she explains. “It wasn’t a very neat or fluid process, but it required me to think about how to fit music into my life in a way that’s entirely on my own terms”. With this album, Your Smith fully steps into who she is now, a Midwesterner, mother, and working artist, and creates from a place of truth, curiosity, and reclaimed joy. “Nothing about it [The Rub] was made for the approval or affirmation of others, and because of that, I created something that’s completely from my heart.”

Album focus track “Caroline” is a confessional centerpiece that captures the heart of The Rub. It joins previously released singles “Mr. Revival,” “Change of Heart,” “Peaches,” “Hey There’s My Girl,” “Little Highways,” and “Leaving You,” each offering a glimpse into Smith’s evolution and setting the stage for the album’s full emotional landscape.

To celebrate the release, Smith also announces a North American tour. The run kicks off this fall with stops at iconic rooms including Racket in New York City, Lincoln Hall in Chicago, the Troubadour in Los Angeles, and First Avenue in Minneapolis, among others.

These shows promise to capture the same honesty and presence that shape The Rub, inviting audiences to share in the joy, intimacy, and revival at the core of Smith’s new chapters.
