Gordi – GD (GODDAMN)

It’s been a hectic few weeks for Australian indie-pop singer, songwriter and producer, Gordi.
Amid a swag of tour dates along the east coast of America, including a show with Anais Mitchell and a performance at SummerStage in Central Park, Gordi – aka Sophie Payten – also appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show, performing a dazzling live version of her lead single “Peripheral Lover.”
Today she drops another taste of her forthcoming third album in “GD (Goddamn)”.
“GD (Goddamn),” the album opener – a raw, intimate track written, recorded, and produced entirely on Gordi’s iPhone – sets the tone for Like Plasticine (out August 8). A meditation on endurance and reconnection, the song pairs sparse, distorted synths with vocals that feel submerged in reflection, like she’s trapped underwater or pressed against a window, looking in on the lives she is wondering how to step back into. “Look around. Slow down. Call your mum.” she breathes.
About the song Gordi reflects, “I wrote it as a poem sitting at a kitchen table in Brooklyn. A few days later at my friend’s place in LA, I recorded the whole thing on my iPhone. I thought it was just a rough demo but it captured the feeling of the song so perfectly. Like it was a memory I was trying to recall but the fragments kept slipping through my fingers. It’s about stopping time.”
A video by Madeleine Purdy documents the intensity of compounding emotions through a beautiful collage of mixed media based story telling.
“GD (Goddamn)” follows a string of tantalising cuts from the album, beginning with “Lunch At Dune” from Gordi’s EP of the same name last year and quickly followed up with “Alien Cowboy”, “Peripheral Lover”, “Cutting Room Floor” and most recent offering “PVC Divide“ (feat. Anaïs Mitchell).

Like Plasticine chronicles the last few transformative years of Gordi’s life. From coming out and having to adjust the vision of her future, to working as a doctor on the frontline during the pandemic, Gordi explores the beauty, heartbreak and finite nature of human experience across 12 new songs.
“Being surrounded by death made me think about how beautiful life is…. I thought about all the ways we are like plasticine in life – how forces we can’t control, contort us into shapes, stretch us thin, and test our resilience. But sometimes, heart-wrenching change can be a thing of beauty.”
