Reyna Tropical – Malegría en la Oscuridad,

Last year, Reyna Tropical — the project of guitarist, singer, songwriter, and producer Fabi Reyna — released her debut album Malegría to wide acclaim. In celebrating the album’s one year anniversary, Reyna announces a remix EP, Malegría en la Oscuridad, out May 23rd via Psychic Hotline.

Malegría en la Oscuridad embraces a more nocturnal vision of Malegría as it reimagines the original album as a collection of songs for the nighttime — deeper, more sensual, and primed for the dancefloor. To bring this vision to life, Reyna invited some of the most fearless innovators in Latin music today to expand the record’s world: Amantes Del Futuro, Sofia Kourtesis, Lido Pimienta, Chancha Via Circuito, and Simón Mejía (formerly of Bomba Estéreo).
Malegría en la Oscuridad was sparked by a surprise moment at a Sylvan Esso DJ set during SXSW, where Reyna first heard their sultry, underworld-inspired edit of “Cartagena.” “It opened my eyes and ears to the wild possibilities of what these songs could become in someone else’s hands,” Reyna recalls.
Each of these artists has touched Reyna’s journey, and their interpretations of the songs feel like a conversation between friends who speak a shared language of sound and spirit. Lead single “Conexión Ancestral (Sofia Kourtesis Edit)” sees Sofia Kourtesis rearranging the track into a lush dancefloor-ready remix.
“When I wrote ‘Conexion Ancestral,’ it was in part for the gay boy that lives in me, and wanting to offer some love and respect to the girls that helped me find sanctuary in the club,” Reyna explains. “I always knew that when the time came, the right person would appear to turn this anthem about diaspora, land, and revolution into the ballroom hit it was meant to transform into. When I heard Sofia Kourtesis’ ‘Madres’ I almost instantly heard ‘Conexion Ancestral’ take on its new form and basically took our mutual homage to Manu Chao as a sign that we were meant to intersect in this vision.”
