Sister Ray – Wings

Sister Ray by Vanessa Heins2

This Friday, Sister Ray will release their sophomore LP Believer, which will be released on Royal Mountain Records.

Believer

The Toronto-by-way-of-Alberta artist, Sister Ray (aka Ella Coyes) earned widespread attention with their 2021 debut, Communion.

Their follow up sees Coyes working with producer Jon Nellen (Big Thief, Nick Hakim), as well as Marc Ribot (Tom Waits), Paul Spring (Holy Hive, Fleet Foxes, El Michaels Affair), and Isaiah Barr (Dev Hynes, David Byrne) to experiment with a new process: pushing themselves to cut a song a day with minimal revisions to let the seams show.

The album has so far seen the release of three singles, the title track, “Magic” and “Animal Thing,” and today Coyes is sharing a final preview before the album’s Friday release, a track called ” Wings.”

Coyes says of the track:

“This song started in 2020, I had the first verse and chorus but it got lost in the void. It showed up again in 2022, I lost my passport on tour and had some very glorious days in Lisbon waiting for documents to get home; wandering, going on a very long internet date, looking at the ocean, and celebrating making it through a hard tour. It felt so free, like anything could happen, but sits in that moment before anything really does.”

In support of their new LP, Sister Ray will be embarking on a US tour with The Weather Station, which begins tomorrow in Brooklyn.
