Grey DeLisle – Sister Shook

Grey Delisle by Julia Dillon

Los Angeles-based GRAMMY-winning, Emmy-nominated singer/songwriter, Grey DeLisle, has released “Sister Shook,” the latest track from her forthcoming double LP, The Grey Album, due April 4th via Hummin’bird Records.

The Grey Album

DeLisle was inspired to write “Sister Shook” after reading a compelling story in Rodney Crowell’s book, Chinaberry Sidewalks.

“Rodney is one of the kindest, most generous songwriting mentors on the planet. I send him songs a lot and he always gives truly heartfelt feedback that makes my stuff 150% better and he never asks for credit,” DeLisle says. “I was reading his fascinating book and was struck by the story of his epileptic mother having ‘demons’ cast out of her in their living room when he was a kid by a woman from church called ‘Sister Shook’,” she continues. “I grew up in a Pentecostal church too and we had some exorcisms in our living room as well, it really got into my brain.”

“Sister Shook” follows “Didn’t We Try,” which features harmonies from Stephen McCarthy (The Long Ryders, The Jayhawks). “I’ve been in and out of 12-step groups my entire life. They always tell you you shouldn’t date anyone in the program for the first year, but I never listen,” she explains of the song’s inspiration. Lead single “40 Something Runaway” features Cherie Currie from The Runaways; Holler called the track a “swaggering slice of classic honky tonk country that mixes the old school twang of Loretta Lynn and Wanda Jackson with the ’70s glam of Suzi Quatro and the garage pop sensibilities of The Donnas.”

DeLisle has also announced a run of tour dates with Old 97’s which kicks off on April 3rd.
