Greta Morgan – The Lost Voice

Hudson Valley-based musician, songwriter, and storyteller Greta Morgan’s new memoir, THE LOST VOICE, will be published May 20th via HarperCollins Publishers’ HarperOne.

After working as a professional musician for many years, Morgan was on the rise and ready to step fully into her place in the music world. She’d travelled the world as a touring member of Vampire Weekend, accompanied Jenny Lewis, and had garnered critical acclaim with her own musical projects, The Hush Sound, Gold Motel, and Springtime Carnivore. But days after playing a gig in March 2020, just as the world began to shut down due to the global pandemic, she contracted a serious case of COVID-19 and, subsequently, discovered her voice was forever changed. In her profound and moving memoir THE LOST VOICE, Morgan takes readers on a deeply personal journey of developing her voice as an artist and the loss of her singing voice as a result of spasmodic dysphonia, a neurological disorder with no known cure.
With her once crystalline voice now reduced to a hush, Morgan saw her promising career come to a standstill. She takes us on a tour of the intimate highs and lows of both her vibrant musical career and her personal life, from sharing the stage with Vampire Weekend to facing unimaginable personal and medical hurdles. As spasmodic dysphonia literally made the words catch in her throat, she came to realize that speaking her truth had always been a struggle. Ironically, the act of losing her voice became the catalyst for expressing her most authentic self.
Exploring the purpose of creativity itself and the definition of artistic passion, Greta discovers how to broaden her artistic horizons and reimagine her sense of identity. Throughout it all, she maintains an unwavering dedication to her craft, and learns to transform her ordeal into an opportunity, find self-acceptance, and discover an inner resilience she had not known before. Morgan’s narrative serves as an inspiring testament to the transformative power of music, the ability to adapt to our circumstances, and the unexpected connection between grief and aliveness. THE LOST VOICE is a raw and intimate portrait of loss, self-discovery, and an artist’s choice to keep living and creating.
In conjunction with the book’s announcement, Morgan has compiled every song and/or artist mentioned in THE LOST VOICE in chronological order into a playlist, which is available to stream on Spotify and Apple Music.
