Eva Penney – You Sound Like Dolphins!

Bristol-based indie-folk artist Eva Penney shares her latest single ‘you sound like the dolphins!’, a mellow, stripped-back arrangement driven by the warm tones of an acoustic guitar and Penney’s soft, soothing vocals. ‘you sound like the dolphins!’ is no different from the family of releases Eva Penney has been dutifully crafting over the past couple of years; it’s warm and quietly personal, littered with downright odd but carefully chosen samples and is so DIY it feels like home. 

Born from a demo made in a single afternoon, this song is a true capsule of time, made even more finalised in the production process by being recorded onto reel to reel cassette tape. This track is one of Penney’s more understated projects, however it feels no less anthemic or powerful. It features mechanical clicks and sweeps of the analogue cassette recorder and gentle synth hums and squeaks, often mistaken by listeners for dolphin sounds. 

A recent addition but a fast favourite at Penney’s live shows, she often fondly talks of the songs’ content. “When you love someone so much, you want to show them off to everyone and show all your favourite people how amazing this new person is, that’s what this is about”.
