Mui Zyu – Nothing Or Something To Die For

mui zyu’s new EP nothing or something to die for (Cantonese tasting menu) is a selection of songs from her sophomore album reworked and recorded in Cantonese via Father/Daughter Records.

mui zyu wanted to put this collection together as an ode to her memories listening to classic Cantonese pop music (by artists including Anita Mui, Faye Wong and Beyond) with her mum and dad growing up.

The translations were a labour of love and the result of hours of phone calls with her father in Hong Kong, plus additional poetic guidance from British/Hong Kong artist lei,e (Emma Lee Moss, formerly Emmy The Great) who also sings on ‘斯帕克’.

mui zyu shares: “i’ve always been in awe of musicians who re-record their work in more than one language (for example the legendary Teresa Teng who sang in Cantonese, Mandarin and Japanese !!). i feel a deeper connection to the songs after disassembling, dissecting and rebuilding the lyrics in Cantonese (thanks to the brains of Emma Lee Moss and my dad). most of the Cantonese language i know is through sweet melodies in song, not speech. deciding to re-record these songs was a way to chase and hopefully taste my cherished memories of listening to classic Canto-pop with my family growing up.”

In a reality where apathy is endemic to unending overwhelm and nihilism offers a welcome reprieve, it can seem near impossible to have it all figured out. As we search for something to make it all worth it, to come up for air, the intricacies of contemporary existence bursts into cacophonous borders. As mui zyu, Hong Kong British artist Eva Liu searches for a portal, wandering between nothing and everything in her pursuit of peace. On her second full-length album nothing or something to die for she looks outward, embracing the chaos with each tentative step. With an eye to the absurd, it asks: how do we find the hole in the wall––the portal––to the path we all crave?
