Valebol – Breakup Sushi

Valebol by Justin Sheehan

Supporting their new album and upcoming tour dates, Valebol drops a stunning slow-motion, one-shot music video for “Breakup Sushi”.

Valebol’s lead singer, Vivian McConnell, (AKA V.V. Lightbody) wrote this song after witnessing a couple arguing at a sushi restaurant and the concept for the accompanying music video felt excitingly obvious. “Tears fall into my soy sauce / is this my fault? / Let’s get the check so we can settle it”

Filmed at a cozy sushi restaurant in Chicago, director Robert Salazar and brilliant team  capture the fallout of seven different tables –  working through their relationships while eating, or throwing, sushi. The cast is star studded with local musicians flexing their drama muscles such as Macie Stewart and Sima Cunningham of Finom, Siul Reynoso of Gabacho, Sam Cantor of Minor Moon.

Valebol (Vah-Lay-Bol) makes danceable, groove-based pop tunes that are effortlessly fun and totally mesmerizing. “The number one rule of Valebol from the beginning was that it has to feel good or else we’re not doing it,” says singer and multi-instrumentalist Vivian McConnell. Along with the Panamá-born drummer and percussionist Daniel Villarreal (International Anthem artist), Valebol is the union of two multifaceted Chicago musicians who together make some of the freest and most inviting music of their careers. Their self-titled debut album (out in April via label Otherly Love Records) is nine songs of casio-driven jams and blissed-out slow burners.
