Men Seni Suyemin ft Kristina Li – Dark Waves

Men Seni Suyemin by Kenzhegulov Azamat

Men Seni Suyemin (Pronunciation: MEN SINNY SOO-YEH-MEN) is the nom de plume of Minona Volandova — a classically trained guitarist and producer from Kazakhstan.

On her new single “Dark Waves,” Men Seni Suyemin conjures a sense of impending danger.

Based on an ancient melody from the Belgorod region in Russia, co-writer and featured guest vocalist Kristina Li adeptly grasps the mood of the song. Sung in Surzhyk, but reinterpreted and enriched with Kazakh flavor and modern sound, this fashion of cultures demonstrates not only a deep respect for tradition, but also a desire for an international dialogue through art. The single’s cover features a font by Katya Maslova, stylized after Kazakh national ornaments.

Minona Volandova shares: “In this track, together with my friend, talented singer Kristina Li, ethnic horror was born. The arrangement I initially came up with was gloomy, like a sign of impending danger, and Kristina managed to feel the mood and chose the melody and words perfectly.”
