People Museum – Sleep

Today New Orleans indie-rock band People Museum share the dreamy single “Sleep (2023).”  Along with the single, People Museum is also sharing the news of their upcoming sophomore LP Relic, which arrives November 10th.

At its core Relic is a love letter to New Orleans, a city with a rich cultural history and deep communal values, and the sacred place People Museum calls home. Upbeat tracks like the fluid “Saturn Rings” and enchanting “Whole Heart” celebrate the ideas of love, collaboration, art, and found family that the band has discovered in the amazing city. These joyful moments are tenderly juxtaposed against darker tracks like “Sinking” and “Coast” which explore the fear, frustration, and grief of watching New Orleans battle to survive climate change from both a geographical and community perspective. People Museum refuses to fall victim to nihilism though, and there is a shining glimmer of hope in every track, almost always through their use of cheery, dynamic brass instruments. An homage to the New Orleans second line tradition, the use of horns perfectly captures the city’s resilience, beauty, and dedication to community.

Written after lead singer Claire Givens had a vision of her mother as a lonely artist child, “Sleep (2023)” is a mystic, ethereal sonic experience about finding your own home and family outside of blood relatives.  Alluring synths and a dynamic brass section add powerful emphasis to Claire’s gauzy, delicate vocals, which are like a celestial sparkle against the luminescent brass and fluttering percussion, creating a feeling of infinite warmth and acceptance.
