Stephanie Schneiderman’s “Wide Open

interviews

Echotone

  • A brave director has documented this, and the stories of some of Austin’s musicians in a new film called Echotone. Echotone provides portraits of a number of musicians including Bill Baird, Black Joe Lewis, and Cari Palazollo of Belaire. It includes some spectacular live performances, and asks the questions about where musicians work, play and live.

Meiko

  • There are those few special times when you find an artist who you know has the talent, longevity, and spirit that you will be talking about them ten, twenty years from now. It is more of a treat when you can meet them at the infancy of their career. Meiko is that rare gem, who, if I was a gambler, would put all my chips in for. Why?

Odetta - In Remembrance

  • Odetta is "Queen of American Folk Music" and much, much more. She has been playing for over fifty years. In going through each decade of Odetta's career one is struck by the high points. They're all high. Odetta was active during the Civil Rights Movement and continues to be active today.

Schuyler Fisk

  • "I certainly have a growing list of musicians I'd love to work with, but to pick just one would be rough."

Words from the Editor's Desk

I turned around and it’s March. February flew by in a flurry of shows, and movies. I still feel exhausted. As you can see FEMMUSIC is still undergoing changes. This month we were submitted some videos and have them in the Video of the Month area. We are accepting songs for free download as well. I still prefer to get physical CDs, but I know a number of you want more.
This month we’re also going to launch the FEMMUSIC blog. This will be another place to hear our rants and ravings. For years when I said I was FEMMUSIC, an online music magazine, the response I would get was, “Oh! A blog.” My aim with FEMMUSIC has always been to be a magazine. A blog is just an added feature, not a new format.
I’ve had a busy month catching shows including Grace Potter, The Decemberists and my newest find, Emilie Autumn. Autumn is a great combination of Amanda Palmer meets Tori Amos. The lyrics are morose, but so well presented.
It’s been a few years since Cabaret Rock became a movement. This month I’ve been listening to a plethora of it. Among the artists who fit this are The Tragic Tantrum, Emilie Autumn, Sweet Soubrette to name some recent few. The style is extremely theatrical in live shows, and in lyric structure. When the Dresden Dolls began a few years ago, they were an anomaly. These days the genre has blossomed so much. It is now equal parts burlesque, punk, metal, and nerd rock It is not the genre to mark this generation, but it is making inroads.
March is the beginning of the summer push in the industry. SXSW happens and afterwards the summer tours are booked. I’m already getting word of some. Last year the industry lost lots of money pushing tours you couldn’t afford. This year they are still doing it. What that means is, come late summer, venues will be offering discount tix to get into shows. The big shows will still have all the effects you want for a triple digit price. I live for the music, not the effects. I’d rather spend $10 for a good show in a small venue, than $80 for nosebleed seats in a monster show. I’m old fashioned that way.
That’s all for the moment. Read the blog for more.

Sincerely,

                                                        Alex Teitz, Editor-In-Chief
